This new spot for Pantene Pro V shampoo and conditioner comes from Grey NY and points out a very true and very depressing cultural truth. Women apologize ALL the time. For the dumbest shit ever. Even things we literally have no control over. The phrase is reflexive. You don’t even realize you’re saying it! And this message is just right for a brand like Pantene Pro V, who wants women to feel confident and strong, rather than meek and timid.

The most interesting part of this spot for me, are the ridiculous comments posted by (presumably) ad professionals. They’re all very literal, claiming that not apologizing is rude. But that’s not the point of the spot. It’s not saying NEVER say you are sorry. It’s saying don’t say it for dumb little things you have no control over. The comments are further proof to me how clueless a lot of guys/girls/professionals are about this double standard and how uncomfortable they are with women being more assertive professionally. Commenters seem to think that NOT saying sorry implies rudeness, when in reality, the examples shown aren’t instances where someone SHOULD be sorry. They’re just random moments. In one, the GUY interrupts the girl in the car and she apologizes. Anyway, thanks for listening to my rant. Better to vent to you guys than to a bunch of cynical ad trolls. Trust me.
